In the 1970s and 80s, Silicon Valley combined its region's research, talent, and resources to capitalize on the booming semiconductor industry, leading to some of the earliest successful tech companies and the regional transformation that made Silicon Valley the hub it is today. Does that transformational tale map to what Raleigh is doing today with IoT? Dr. Sarah Glova led this discussion about how 1970’s and 80’s Silicon Valley parallels with today's Triangle ecosystem (and how lessons learned from Silicon Valley's growth could protect Raleigh from negative effects like skyrocketing living costs and inequitable diversity in leadership).

In 1987, female business owners could be required to have a male relative cosign for loans. Even if she was the 100% owner of her business. Things are different now, so what changed? Well, as Dr. Sarah Glova shares in this unique talk, in 1988 H.R. 5050 passed which was the Women’s Business Ownership Act, which removed the requirement for women to have male relative cosigners on a loan. The group behind making this possible was called National Association Women Business Owners (NAWBO), and there were many active chapters around our country, made up of women advocating for change. This talk was an opportunity for attendees to learn more about some of these female entrepreneur advocates.
